International Schools & Sea Turtles 911: 2012
For GNIS and their sister school in Australia, I created and led a trip with Laura Gross at Sea Turtles 911 in Hainan Island, China for 25 students. We flew from Guangzhou to Sanya where we stayed in a nearby fishing for one week. Students learned about marine biology, sea turtle care, and conservation. With expert input, they created lessons and materials that they then taught at a local elementary school. Senior students also had previously created research projects for their IBDP Geography courses which they completed by working with local villagers and the marine police. All students also helped serve the local community by doing several beach clean ups.
Mangrove Restoration & Sea Turtles 911: 2011
For GNIS I designed, organized, and led a 7-day "project week" experiential and service learning trip to Hainan Island for 35 students. Students created research projects related to ecology, geology, and biodiversity conservation. They completed their field work project research with the help of professors and graduate students from Hainan University and the International Rice Research Institute. They also did mangrove restoration with the Dongzhaigang Mangrove Preserve and helped the elderly in local villages. Next, they worked with Sea Turtles 911 to perform maintenance and basic veterinary care at a floating sea turtle hospital as well as teach local students about marine life. Finally, they were about to explore a rainforest and lava tubes.
Rainforest Reserve Rangers Training: 2010
For GNIS I designed, organized, and led a 9-day experiential and service learning project camp to Hainan Island for 12 students. Students did mangrove restoration with Dongzhaigang Mangrove Reserve, ran learning events with locals chools, and helped the elderly in local villages. At the Yinggeling National Rainforest Preserve students learned about rainforest ecology with park rangers. They completed biology research projects with their biology teacher. At the local high school, they helped lead a fun day of learning events. Finally, they beautified the area near the ranger station.
